We took part in the launch in Oviedo of the Económetro 2026, the socio-economic confidence indicator developed by the Asturian Association of Economists in collaboration with the University of Oviedo, and with the support of Caja Rural de Asturias and Lener Asesores.
Our partner Sergio Gutiérrez Rey, from the restructuring department, spoke at the event alongside Abel Fernández Martínez, Dean and President of the Association; Santiago Álvarez, technical coordinator of the study; and Mariano Espín, commercial director of Caja Rural de Asturias.
This year’s survey saw the participation of 316 Asturian economists, who paint a picture of a more cautious outlook and a slight sense of mistrust regarding economic developments, against a backdrop of geopolitical uncertainty. Among the factors that most influence Asturias’ competitiveness are the tax burden, energy prices, and infrastructure and transport links.
In the field of corporate restructuring, Sergio Gutiérrez calls for close attention to be paid to developments in key sectors in Asturias, such as the steel and metallurgical industries, the agri-food and livestock sectors, as well as the hospitality and retail sectors in inland areas.
According to the partner at Lener, “the region has decisive strengths, such as the quality of its human capital, the strength of its academic and professional institutions, and a culture of hard work and dedication that will enable it to weather this cycle and emerge stronger”.
The study also addresses highly topical issues such as access to housing, the role of tourism in the region’s growth, the potential of the defence industry as a catalyst for industrial growth, and the impact of the EU–Mercosur agreement on Asturias’ primary sector.
